The Great Sphinx of Giza

March 14, 2010 - The Sphinx

The Great Sphinx is a colossal stone statue commonly believed to have been built about 2530 BC by the pharaoh Khafre who also was the builder and occupant of the second Giza pyramid. Located next to the pyramids of Giza and carved out of limestone, the Sphinx has the facial features of a man and the body of a recumbent lion; it is approximately 240 feet (73 m) long and 66 feet (20 m) high.

The Sphinx is thought to be a guardian figure and some believe an oracle. There are a great number of mysteries surrounding the Sphinx. Some believe it was weathered by water and therefore was built closer to 7000 BC and others believe it is connected to the Lost City of Atlantis.

Whenever it was built, it is impressive. We visited there while on an NCL cruise. For more photos you can look at our photo album here
